Letter: Physics Help From the Friends

To the Editor:

I am writing to thank the Friends of the Hanover Norwich Schools for their generous donation to the science and math departments of Hanover High School. The Friends funded the purchase of two high-speed video cameras for use in student experiments.

Students at Hanover High use the cameras for projects in math modeling, physics and honors physics classes. Two particularly impressive studies analyzed the hitting of a tennis ball with a racquet and the firing of a tennis ball by an air cannon. These high-speed video cameras enabled students to determine the velocity of the tennis ball, which ranged from 65 to 400 miles per hour! Thanks to the Friends of the Hanover Norwich Schools, students can use these cameras to make measurements that were not previously possible.
