Letter: Animal Abuse Under the Big Top
To the Editor:
Bravo to Kerry Gudlewski (“A Better Show Without Animals,” Aug. 3) and Margaret Hurley (“Stop Promoting Animal Abuse,” Aug. 3) for their responses to Henry Homeyer’s July 23 article, “The Greatest Shows on Earth.” I, too, grew up with trips to the circus and a love of TV’s Circus Boy. When I attempted to take my own 3-year-old daughter to a circus in our neighborhood, she refused to go. Today, she stands at the entrance to “The Greatest Show on Earth” interviewing moms and dads about their feelings about the abuse of animals. I find it ironic that, in a culture that loves pets so much, other animals are so dismally taken for granted, including wildlife. Hunting for “the fun of it,” anyone?
