Roger Lowell Daum
Thetford, Vt. — Roger Daum, 75, died suddenly at home on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Born in Strobelton, Pa. in 1938, to Russell and Dorothy Daum, Roger lived a spirited and busy life filled with service to others, his continued love of learning, and the incredible joy that each day brings.
Roger attended Clarion University in Clarion, Pa., earning a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his studies at the University of Del., and completed the Master of Science program. A true believer in education, his accomplishments include administering Environmental Outdoor Education programs in Ridley Creek State Park in Media, Pa. and the Gunning Bedford School District in Delaware. While living in Media, he was a Science Supervisor for the Wilmington, Del. public schools. He went on to teach science at Springfield (Vt.) High School, Thetford Academy and The Newton School in Strafford, Vt. He was an adjunct professor at Colby-Sawyer College and the Community College of Vermont. Roger was also a member of the United States Army Reserve, serving for over twenty years.
Roger was an active member of his church community throughout his life. In his married life attending; the Concord Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Del., Middletown Presbyterian Church in Middletown, Pa., the Congregational Church in Springfield, Vt. and the West Fairlee and Post Mills Congregational Churches.
Fulfilling a lifelong dream, he entered the seminary program at Gordon-Conwell and transferred to the Andover Newton Theological School, earning a Master of Divinity in 2003. Most recently, he was awarded the Doctorate of Ministry from Bangor Theological Seminary on June 23, 2013. He was fortunate to find congregations in both West Fairlee and Post Mills, Vermont, serving as Pastor of West Fairlee from 1994 and Post Mills from 2002 until his death this June.
Roger had enduring passion for all of God’s creation and the fruits of the spirit and of the mind. Nothing made him so happy as the outpouring of God’s love. He also had a fantastic admiration of and enjoyment in the element of surprise, living each day with a warm sense of humor - always ready for life’s new adventures.
Music played a constantly enjoyable role in Roger’s life. An accomplished singer, Roger lent his voice to; The North Country Chordsmen, The Handel Society, the Jeremiah Ingalls Singers, church choirs and musical theater pursuits with; The Springfield Players and North Country Community Theater, where two of his favorite roles included; “Tevye” from Fiddler on the Roof and “Pontius Pilate” from Jesus Christ Superstar. He loved playing the trumpet with family and friends and was also a gifted piano and Clavinova player; writing and performing original compositions.
Roger is survived by his partner for life, Martha Ann (Mendenhall) Daum with whom he shared 51 years of love; his sister, Marjorie (Daum) Petzold and her family; his children, Larry, Mary, John and Cathee; grandchildren, Tara (Daum) Harrison, Torin and Nicky Daum, Ryan, Johnathan and Christopher Ford, Kylie Daum, Alex Daum and Nadia and Grace Clement; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Lauren Harrison.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the Post Mills Church with Rev. Gail Dimick officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot with full Military honors in the Post Mills Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Monday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hale Funeral Home, Route 113, Thetford Center, Vt.
