Joanne Leser Bertozzi

Hanover, N.H. — Joanne Leser Bertozzi, born June 27, 1918 in Newark, N.J. to Danish parents, died peacefully Saturday, April 27, 2013 in Hanover. Joanne read widely and thought deeply; a woman of rare intelligence and insight. She had a deep concern for social justice, an abhorrence of cruelty, and a keen sensitivity to all forms of corruption and the linguistic distortions that support them.

Throughout her life she was involved in organizations such as the League of Women Voters, Head Start and Planned Parenthood. She also actively supported many progressive causes to strengthen our nation’s democratic institutions.

Joanne loved the beauty of spring, wild flowers, gardening, philosophy, literature and poetry, her children, her grandchildren and her dogs. She was especially drawn to the ocean and the life in its tidal pools. Joanne and her husband, Eugene Bertozzi moved to Kendal at Hanover in 1993 from Bucks County, Pa. where they had been active members of Yardley Friends Meeting. Eugene Bertozzi, her devoted husband of 68 years, was a polymer chemist with a deep interest in mathematics and astronomy.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Bertozzi-Buck and her husband, Donald Buck of Orford, N.H., her son, Mark Bertozzi and Susan Weber of Albany, N.Y., her son, Paul Bertozzi of Belmont, Mass.; her granddaughter, Sarah Bertozzi Kessler and her husband, David Kessler of New York City and her grandson, Steven Bertozzi of Woodstock, Conn.

There will be a private memorial service at a later date.
