Letter: Easy Way to Help the Earth

To the Editor:

Carefully choosing what we put into our environment is critical to preserving life on this Earth. One simple way to help ourselves and the Earth is to choose nontoxic, unscented, biodegradable laundry, body-care and cleaning products. Most laundry detergents, dryer sheets, fabric softeners, stain removers, lotions, soaps, shampoos, cleaners, etc., are full of chemicals that are toxic to us, our children and our pets. They pollute our precious water supply every time we use them. Many of these chemicals are known carcinogens and neurotoxins and are nondegradable.

In particular, any product that has the word “fragrance” in the list of the ingredients is to be avoided, as a single “fragrance” can contain as many as 600 toxic chemicals. These chemicals leach into our bodies through skin contact and by breathing in the scents. The fragrance industry is not government regulated.

The list of illnesses associated with fragrance chemicals is growing rapidly and includes cancer, asthma, neurological disorders, allergies, sperm damage, reproductive disorders, birth defects and on and on. The Environmental Working Group has a wonderful website with tons of information on how to choose products that are less toxic for us and for our dear Earth: http://www.ewg.org.

Choose nontoxic, biodegradable, unscented products whenever possible. If you must have a fragrance, choose products that are scented with natural essential oils only. We vote every time we buy something. Vote for the health of Earth and all of its inhabitants.
