Big Green Suffers 1st Loss
Auburndale, Fla. — Dartmouth College’s baseball team came up short of breaking the school record for consecutive victories to begin a season as Slippery Rock (13-4) handed the Big Green a 7-3 defeat in the Russ-Matt Invitational yesterday. The loss ended the eight-game win streak, leaving Dartmouth (8-1) tied with the 1903 Big Green for the best start to a season.
The Rock, ranked 28th in the most recent Collegiate Baseball Division II poll, scored six times in the second to take control of the game.
Lou Concato (0-1) took the loss for Dartmouth. The right-hander surrendered all seven runs on 11 hits over 51∕3 innings, but did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high six.
Nick Ruppert had three of Dartmouth’s 10 hits, while teammate Matt Parisi added a single and a double.
Dartmouth is back in action this afternoon when it plays Bradley (8-9) at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla., at 3 p.m.
Rutgers 6, Dartmouth 5
Tampa, Fla. — Rutgers (8-8) edged Dartmouth (8-6) in the first game of the Big Green’s scheduled twin bill. Dartmouth’s second game against South Florida was cancelled because of rain. The Scarlet Knights scored two runs apiece in the first, third and fifth innings.
Dartmouth pitcher Kristen Rumley tossed seven innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk. She went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs.
The Big Green will continue spring break action today against Florida Gulf Coast.
Heads to AHL
Bridgeport, Conn. — Mike Keenan, who recently wrapped up his senior season as Dartmouth captain, signed an amateur tryout contract with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League, the team announced yesterday.
In his final season with the Big Green, Keenan set career highs in goals (five), assists (11), points (16) and penalty minutes (58), and was tabbed as a member of the 2012-13 All-Ivy League First Team.
The Sound Tigers are the top minor-league affiliate of the NHL’s New York Islanders.
