Grantham, N.H. — Christopher Place died peacefully at his home in Grantham on Monday, March 11, 2013, at age 83 with family members at his side.
Chris was born in Lowell, Mass., on March 14,1929, a son of Christopher Joseph and Eleanor Pope Place. He graduated from Lowell High School and served in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Boston University School of Industrial Technology and Spartan School of Aeronautics. In 1952 Chris’s dream came true when he accepted a position as Flight Engineer with Pan American World Airways, retiring in 1989 after 36 years with Pan Am.
Chris met his future wife, Gwendolyn Larkin, on a blind date, and they had 59 wonderful years together. They spent the early days of their marriage in Beirut, Lebanon, where Pan Am had a base. Chris and Gwen have two daughters, Christine and her husband Jack Taylor of Lyme, N.H., and Susan and her husband Tom Merrell of Tuftonboro, N.H. They have four grandchildren, Ben and Susan Taylor and Hannah and Caroline Merrell.
Chris was a fine and talented woodworker and has created many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family that will become heirloom pieces.
Chris and Gwen spent 34 years in Redding, Conn., before moving to Grantham. While in Redding, Chris was active in his community and Christ Church Parish where he served on the Vestry and as Warden.
Chris was predeceased by his brother Joseph Place and by his sister Ann Santos. He is survived by his loving wife, daughters and grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 in New London, N.H.
