KUA Girls Win Playoff Opener
Deerfield, Mass. — Fiekah Fataar had 18 points and 26 rebounds as second-seeded Kimball Union Academy crushed No. 7 St. Luke’s School 73-32 in the a NEPSAC girls basketball quarterfinal game yesterday at Deerfield Academy.
Fataar scored the game’s first five points. Teammate Jill Clark had a season-high 17 points, which included five 3-pointers. Kaitie Sanders added 11 points and Shannon Walsh 10.
Strong defense by KUA’s Becca DeTurk, Gretchen Schissel and Sanders held St. Luke’s at bay throughout the half, giving the Wildcats a 20-point cushion at the break.
KUA will face either Proctor Academy or Berwick Academy tomorrow at a time to be determined.

South Royalton 31
Newport, Vt. — South Royalton (6-15) lost to United Christian in the first round of the Vermont Division IV tourney.
Ian Kinnarney scored 15 points for the Royals, who were 2-for-11 from the free throw line, with all nine misses coming in the fourth quarter. Teammate Nate Moore added eight points.
The Royals trailed 12-11 at halftime.
KUA 59, Vt. Academy 57
Meriden — Devon Thomas scored 22 points as Kimball Union (19-7) edged Vermont Academy in the NEPSAC AA quarterfinals.
KUA led 41-28 early in the second half, but the lead was whittled down to two with seconds left in the game. Vermont got two good looks from beyond the arc, but they fell short and time ran out.
Malik Abu had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, who will head to Groton School tomorrow for the semifinal round.
Gunnery 4, KUA 1
Derrfield, Mass. — Kimball Union (28-3-0) lost to The Gunnery School in the quarterfinals of the Elite 8 tournament at Eaglebrook School.
Doyle Somerby scored for the Wildcats, with Gregg Burmaster earning the assist.
Hanover — Dartmouth’s home opener against New Hampshire, originally scheduled for yesterday, will played today because of inclement weather. Opening draw at Scully-Fahey Field is at 3 p.m.
