Marcia Emma True Burch

Claremont, N.H. — Marcia Emma True Burch, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, Feb. 17, 2013, at her home in Claremont.

She was born Sept. 5, 1929, in Windsor, Vt. the daughter of Alden and Hazel (Blake) True. She attended Windsor schools, graduating number 7 in her class in 1947. She went on to earn a B.S. in Education, English major in 1951 at the University of Vermont. Four days later, she married Charles John Burch, Jr. Three weeks later he was shipped to Korea, returning after serving for 21 months. She taught in Shoreham, Vt. from 1951 to 1952, and then at Windsor High School from 1952 to 1953 where she also coached athletics and dramatics.

Over the next twenty years she did substitute teaching in Newport, Exeter, Bristol and Plymouth, N.H. She then returned to full-time teaching at Newfound High School in Bristol as librarian and visual aid director from 1973 to 1974. The family moved to Claremont in 1974 and she taught English in Newport for three years before moving to Claremont Junior High School in September of 1977 as English teacher and librarian. When the school became a middle school she had earned certification as a media generalist and became full time librarian where she remained until June of 1995 when she retired from full-time teaching.

Mrs. Burch was always a civic minded volunteer. In the 1960’s, she was a Cub Scout Den mother, Girl Scout leader and active Booster Club member. She served on the Goodwin Community Center Board for 12 years and was chosen as Volunteer of the Year in 1997. She also did fundraising for the local Red Cross chapter and volunteered at blood banks. She was a member of the Fiske Free Library Trustees for a number of years. She was a ward clerk for over 10 years and loved election days.

Marcia was predeceased by one sister, Helen True; her parents, Alden and Hazel True; and her husband, Charles J. Burch, Jr., who died in 1978.

Marcia was very family-oriented and was much loved by her family and many dear friends. She is survived by her children, Charles J. Burch, III and his wife, Mim of Kennebunk, Maine, Daniel A. Burch and his wife, Glenda of Raleigh, N.C., Kristin H. Burch of Windsor, Vt. and Jason A. Burch of Webster, Mass.; four grandchildren, Darian, Caitlin, Alexandra and Kyla Burch; two step-grandsons, Nicholas and Patrick Myers; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 3 p.m., with Pastor Priscilla Hull of Claremont, officiating. Committal services will be held in the spring in the family lot in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor.
