Letter: Power of the Purse

To the Editor:

Last October, we threw a big party, and now we want to share the good news. The Women’s Leadership Council of Granite United Way’s second annual Power of the Purse celebration at Wilder Events Center brought together 120 local women and raised over $15,000. We will now begin the process of soliciting and reviewing grant requests from local agencies offering programs that benefit Upper Valley women.

Our first “Power of the Purse” was held at the Shaker Inn in Enfield in 2011 and raised $12,000. This money was shared by WISE, Headrest and the Second Wind Foundation for sustainable programs helping women dealing with addiction issues. We are also proud to have supported the Grafton County Drug Court with a donation to offset the cost of offering behavioral training to counselors at Headrest who work with drug court members.

We want to thank all of our generous sponsors, the wonderful women who worked on committees, local stores, individuals who supported us with donations of purses and gift certificates, and Power of the Purse guests in attendance. You have proven that an event can be fun, successful and beneficial to our community. Thank you all!
