Joel Gage Nichols
Woodstock, Vt. — Joel Gage Nichols, 76, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at his home in West Woodstock.
The son of Dr. Howard G. and Margaret Nichols, Joel was born Nov. 16, 1936, in Boston, Mass. He spent his childhood in Haverhill, Groveland and West Newbury, Mass. A graduate of Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, Mass., Joel spent summers during high school and college working on the Appalachian Trail Crew and was Trailmaster for two years. After earning a Bachelors degree at the University of Vermont, he enlisted in the US Army in 1960 and served four years. While he was in the Army he met his wife, Pia Stråhle. After he was discharged in 1964, Joel and his wife settled in West Woodstock.
He worked for several years at Poma Aerial Tramways in Woodstock before starting his own construction business, Precision Concrete Foundations, which he ran until his retirement. Joel loved the outdoors and was most at home in the woods. Although a quiet man by any measure, he had a knack for telling a good story and many of his most memorable stories involved his time on the Appalachian Trail crew.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Pia Stråhle Nichols, his daughter and son-in-law Kit Nichols and Duncan Kuhn of Boston, a granddaughter Isla Kuhn, and his brother Geoffrey Nichols of Pomfret, VT and his family. He was predeceased by his son Lars Gage Nichols in 1994.
A celebration of Joel’s life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project or the charity of your choice.
