Wilmot Whitney, Jr.
Putney, Vt. — Wilmot Whitney, Jr., formerly of Weston, Mass., and Croydon, N.H., died peacefully in Vermont, with family by his side, on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the age of 85.
A beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, Wilmot is survived by his wife, Martha (Marty) Whitney; their children, Laura Whitney Ribbins of Grand Cayman, Wilmot (Chip) Whitney III and his wife, Tiffany of Grafton, Mass., Hallie Whitney and husband, Rob Cowen from Durango, Colo., Marianna Jacobs and husband, Richard from Putney; his grandchildren, Sam Whitney, Amelia and Julia Whitney, and Asia and Eli Jacobs. One of four children, Wilmot is survived by Nancy Berglund of Northboro, Mass., Margaret Phillips of Weston, Mass. and John Whitney of Plymouth, Vt.
Son of Wilmot and Margaret Whitney of Weston, Wilmot was born on April 17, 1927. Wilmot graduated with the class of 1946 from St. Paul’s School, Concord, N.H. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II before attending Harvard University and Marlboro College in Vermont. As a passionate realtor and community member he established Wilmot Whitney, Inc. Real Estate, Weston, Mass. in 1973. He was elected President of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board, was a former member of Weston Rotary, Weston Police Department, Weston Golf Club, and The Hollywood Club in the Adirondacks. Wilmot was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed skiing, boating, hunting, fishing and camping with family and friends. Whether he was at the helm of Avatar or sailing to Africa with his grandchildren in the backyard dinghy, his laughter and power of the human heart impacted all of those who shared his life.
A celebration of Wilmot’s life will be held on Febr. 22, 2 p.m. at the First Parish Church in Weston.
