Frances M. Hoke

New London, N.H. — Frances M. (Beardsley) Hoke, 94, of Hilltop Place, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at her home.

She was born in Hartford, Conn. on Nov. 15, 1918, the daughter of Howard W. and Marion (Perkins) Beardsley. She graduated from The Chaffee School in 1936 and earned a B.A. Degree from Smith College in 1940 where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

For many years Mrs. Hoke lived in West Hartford until moving to New London in 1974 where she had been a summer resident from 1956-1974.

She was a member of The First Baptist Church of New London. A consistent community volunteer, she had been the head of the Summer Residents’ Committee in New London for many years, was a former trustee of Loomis Chaffee School and helped found and was a former member of the Urban League of Hartford. She loved to read and enjoyed reading to others.

Frances married Marshall P. Hoke in San Angelo, Texas on Jan. 31, 1942.

Besides her husband of 71 years, she is survived by five children, Marshall P. and Barbara (Prescott) Hoke, Jr. of Edson, Alberta, Canada, Margaret H. and Bob L. Riddle of Leeds, Mass., Alexander P. Hoke of Atlanta, Ga., David B. and Margaret (Young) Hoke of Enosburg Falls, Vt. and Howard B. and Katharyn Risley Hoke of Elkins, N.H.; 11 grandchildren, Jonas, Daniel, Jamie, Francie, Hannah, Marshall, Gillian, Riley, Lat, Meghan and Sarah; three great grandsons and two great granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at 2 p.m. at The First Baptist Church of New London with The Rev. Charles Glidewell, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, Conn. in the spring.
