June L. Burrington

Grafton, N.H. — June Lillian (Valia) Burrington, 74, a life-long dedicated resident of Grafton, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at DHMH.

She was born July 25, 1938 in Grafton, the second child of Winnie B.(Morse) and Leon G. Vaila.

June went to school in Grafton at the Pine School on Cherry Hill and the East Grafton School (now the Grafton Town Hall), and then she went to Bristol, riding the Peanut Train to and from school.

June was married in 1954 to John F.Bassett (who predeceased her), and they ran a small family farm on Slab City Road, (which had been Grafton’s 1848 rural school house). They raised three children: Diane W. and Robert J. of Grafton, and Clayton F. (who predeceased her in 2002). June enjoyed family farm life and gardening the land they cleared. June was a bus driver, and then Bus Manager for Mascoma School District for 38 years, as well as Treasurer for the Town of Grafton for the past 40+ years. June was always involved with her beloved town of Grafton, and for the past 7 years she enjoyed working at Canaan Hardware. June later married Donald Burrington, (who predeceased her). They lived on their Tunnel Road Sheep Farm, where June, an avid flower gardener, kept her green thumb busy. For the past 14 years, June and her daughter Diane, have farmed and worked together enjoying life at Jundia Sheep Farm.

June is survived by her children, Diane and Robert both of Grafton, and daughter-in-law, Barbara Bassett of Texas; four grandchildren, Nathan & Jenny Hogue of Grafton, Leif & Sara Hogue of Canaan, Breanna & Danielle Bassett of Texas; two great grandchildren, Hailey and Samara Hogue of Canaan, N.H., family friend Paul Girard, and her beloved dog Lucky-Lee. Her granddaughter Katie Bassett predeceased her.

June will be missed for her outspoken ways, as well as her dedication, integrity, honesty, and loyalty to her family, to her friends, to the town of Grafton, to Jundia farm, and to Canaan Hardware.

The family will have a private memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in June’s name to: Grafton Recreational Department - earmarked - Fourth of July Fireworks, PO Box 299, Grafton, N.H. 03240.
