Austin Haight Gedney, Jr.
Claremont, N.H. — Austin “Bud” Haight Gedney, Jr., 85 of Claremont passed away on Wednesday morning, Dec. 12, 2012.
Bud was born on March 31, 1927 in Mamaroneck, N.Y., the son of Austin Haight Gedney and Edythe Wiles Gedney. Bud graduated Mamaroneck High School in 1944 and Dartmouth College in 1948. Bud has been a lifelong advocate of Dartmouth College, holding various officer positions in the Alumni Class of 1948 and a member of the Alumni Council. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Scholar Athlete Award from the Class of ’48.
In 1949, Bud married “the prettiest girl in the world”, Virginia Appel from Sleepy Eye, Minn.
Bud spent his entire professional career in the advertising business, starting at the Biao Company, McCann Erickson and finally one of the original partners in the start-up Carrafiello Diehl and Associates. At CDA, Bud was instrumental in introducing the entire Centrum and Stress-Tab Vitamin line to the American public.
In 1986, Bud and Ginny retired to New Hampshire and spent the balance of their years enjoying New England, the Dartmouth College Community and spending time with their four children, nine grandchildren and several very large dogs.
Bud is survived by his wife, Ginny of 63 years. They have four children, Chip and his wife, Sue of Larchmont, N.Y., Lisa Broderick and her husband, Jim of Mamaroneck, N.Y., Bart and his wife, Caroline of Wilton, Conn. and their daughter Amy; as well as nine grandchildren, Scott, Kristen, Kevin, Kathleen, Kelly, Jimmy, Ryan, Melanie and Jake.
Funeral services will be privately held at a later date.
