Kenneth S. Barclay

Vero Beach, Fla. — Kenneth S. Barclay, 86, died on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, in Vero Beach.

A Florida resident, he summered for many years in Vermont. Born in Montreal, he lived in Canada through 1972, when, for business reasons, he and his family became U.S. residents and, in due course, citizens.

Following graduation from McGill University in 1949, Mr. Barclay enjoyed a notable business career, retiring in 1986 as the long time Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of a major international group of engineering, manufacturing and construction companies. Personal investments and a range of interests occupied him subsequently.

A gifted all-around athlete in his youth, World War II infantry soldier, fly fisherman, shot gunner, skier and occasional golfer, he remained a traveled, well-read, contemplative private person who put a premium on friends, relevance and quality.

Mr. Barclay is survived by his wife, Audrey (Richardson) whom he married in 1953; his daughter, Wendy of Barnard, Vt.; and her two adult children, Jenn and Geoffrey. A son, Stuart Murray Barclay, predeceased him at age 29 in the 1988 Libyan bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

At Mr. Barclay’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
