Frederick G. Ray

New London, N.H. — Frederick G. Ray, of Sutton Road, died Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Woodcrest Village. He was born on April 1, 1925, in Katonah, N.Y. the son of Robert B. and Helen C. (Gorham) Ray.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Economics in 1947 and served in the US Navy during WWII. He also received a diploma of graduation in Commercial banking from Rutgers. Fred was in banking, starting as a teller and worked his way up to CEO, president and Chairman of the board at Rochester Savings Bank in Rochester, N.Y. and retired from there in 1985. He moved permanently to New London in 1986 and lived between there and Naples, Fla. for the next 28 years. Fred lived at Woodcrest for the past 2 1/2 years.

He was an avid tennis and golfer for years. Very active with the Boy Scouts and the Daniel Webster Council in Manchester, N.H., Fred loved to travel and spent many retirement years taking trips all over the world with Anne. He enjoyed horses and for years drove a pony in the New London Hospital Days parade. He enjoyed camping and hiking in the White Mountains, sitting and working crossword puzzles. He was a very enthusiastic Red Sox fan attending all the pre-season games in Ft. Myers each year with Anne. He also enjoyed many years of skiing at Cannon Mt. in Franconia and King Ridge in New London. He was a frequent spectator at the grand kids sporting events. He enjoyed music and was an active member of both Rochester Philharmonic League and Naples Philharmonic Orchestra.

Fred was a member of The First Baptist Church of New London, The Rotary Club in New London and prior to moving to N.H. had been a Lions Club member in Rochester, NY.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anne (McLaren) Ray. Members of his family surviving include his daughter, Karen Johnston of Wilmot, N.H.; son, Peter Ray of Vashon Island, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Jessica Theis, New London, James Snyder, New London, Jason Snyder of California, Justin Snyder, Sunapee, Savannah Flood of Wilmot, Rohry Flood, Maryland, Peter Flood, Rhode Island and Whitney Flood, California; and five great-grandchildren, Ciara, daughter of James and Marianna, Jameson, Owen and Aubrey Theis, children of Jessica and Nick and Zellia, daughter of Whitney and wife, Julie.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at 1 p.m. at The First Baptist Church of New London. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at 1 p.m. in Union Valley Cemetery, Mahopac, N.Y.
