Fairlee, Vt. — Florence Jenks died at Valley Terrace in Hartford, Vt., on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. She was born in Lyme, N.H., on Dec. 22, 1918, the daughter of Leo and Fannie Mae (Chapin) Wilmot. She attended school in Lyme and Lebanon College. In 1941 she married Merton A. Jenks of Lyme. In 1944 they bought the Cedar Circle Farm in East Thetford, Vt., where they lived for 34 years. She was a secretary at Dartmouth College for 26 years and retired in 1980. After retiring from the farm in 1978, she and her husband lived in Thetford Center until they moved to Fairlee in 1984.
She was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church in Thetford and later, the Community Church in Fairlee; Community Church Circle; and Rondo. She was a PTA President, a Ford Sayre ski instructor, a 4-H Club Leader, and a plane spotter during World War II. Her hobbies were flowers and birds, golfing, knitting, needlepoint, and rug hooking.
She was predeceased by her husband, two brothers and two sisters. She leaves her daughter, Dorothy Fuchs, of Brownington, Vt.; two grandchildren, Diane Fuchs of Essex Junction, Vt., and Dennis Fuchs of Enfield, Vt.; one great grandchild, Amara Fuchs; a sister, Marjorie Hathaway, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m., at the Highland Cemetery in Lyme (or, in case of inclement weather, at the Community Church of Fairlee) with Pastor Richard Hodge officiating. There will be no calling hours.
