Good Neighbors Lyme Residents Pull Together and Pitch In After the Storm
I received a call from Hanover Dispatch at 2 a.m. on Mondays, April 16, about trees on wires. This was the first of many similar reports in the early hours. By 5 a.m., eight volunteer firefighters were on duty. By 7 a.m., we realized that keeping the main roads open was the most we could do. With high winds toppling trees all around us, even that job became too dangerous. See full story
Rich in Social Capital
The most recent nor'easter brought out the best in people from my hometown. Volunteer groups in Lyme worked around the clock to ensure the safety of others and to perform vital town operations. Neighbors helped neighbors, from establishing an emergency shelter for power-outage victims to clearing the roads of fallen trees and debris. The days following the storm were an illustration of social capital at its finest, and Gov. John Lynch's administration is now considering using Lyme's emergency response as a model for small towns.
