Much of the information in this almanac was collected over the past few months with the help of town clerks and other officials in the more than 40 communities that make up the Valley News coverage area.
Due to the volume of information involved, it was not possible to verify all the names and contact information provided for each town. We’ve worked to include the most current information available, but some of the information might be outdated. We regret omissions or inaccuracies.
Statistical information about each community was gathered from the University of Vermont Center for Rural Studies and the Economic and Labor Market Information Bureau of New Hampshire Employment Security.
The school and enrollment statistics are different for communities in the two states because of differences in how the two agencies present the statistics. The New Hampshire totals reflect the number of student enrolled at that grade level in schools located in that community. The Vermont totals reflect the number of residents from that town matriculating at that grade level, regardless of the where the school is located.
The property tax rates come from the Vermont Department of Taxes and the New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration.
Vermont rates are the total tax rates for homestead properties and are per $100 of assessed value. New Hampshire rates are per $1,000 of assessed value.
The photographs, taken by Valley News staff photographers, show town offices or aspects of town offices and town halls in each community.
