PLACES OF INTEREST

The town's primary attraction is Silver Lake, which was originally called Stebbins Pond and covers about 100 acres. Small boats are permitted. There are 40 to 50 private cottages or camps along the south, west and east shores. In winter, the lake is a popular site for ice fishing, ice hockey and skating. The town is also crisscrossed with snowmobile trails.
The Appalachian Trail passes through Barnard on its way from Georgia to Baxter State Park in Maine.
Barnard is graced with three churches: the Silver Lake Chapel, built in the 1840s; the Barnard Universalist Church, built in 1844; and the East Barnard Church, built in 1834-1835. Only the Silver Lake Chapel is open year-round.
