Bayley-Hazen Military Road: starts just north of the village of Wells River off Route 5. A plaque has been erected to show the starting point of this 65-mile-long trail. The road was built by the founder of Newbury, Jacob Bayley; the founder of nearby Haverhill, N.H., John Hazen; and 60 men using oxen. Construction of the road started in 1776 after Gen. George Washington urged Bayley to find a shorter route to Canada. In 1779, construction on the road was discontinued and the road stops in Hazen's Notch in Westfield, Vt.
