West Fairlee —  Voters rejected an effort to trim the requested budget of the West Fairlee Fire Association at Town Meeting Saturday morning.

After hearing a discussion that included the fielding of questions by Fire Chief Cory Austin and Treasurer Lisa Ordway, an amendment that would have flat-funded the department at $50,000 was defeated, said Selectboard Chairwoman Deslie Hoyt.

A voice vote on the amendment “was not entirely clear,” Hoyt said, so the moderator called for a show of hands that demonstrated a clear majority of the estimated 30 attendees were against level-funding.

The original motion, to allocate $55,000, passed overwhelmingly on a voice vote.

An appropriation for the Lake Fairlee Association was tweaked to correct for a clerical error; as a result, the allocation was $2,100, up $100 from the amount listed on the warning.

All of the other appropriations for social service organizations passed handily, according to Hoyt, which includes a request to increase funding for the Upper Valley Ambulance from about $24,000 to about $28,000.

Voting by ballot to approve the $592,000 operating budget and elect town officials in unopposed races will take place in the Community Building from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
