Union Village Dam to Remain Closed

Saturday, July 22, 2017

Thetford — A popular access point to the Union Village Dam will remain closed for the rest of the recreational season, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said this week.

Because of damage caused by 4.5 inches of rain that pummeled the area on July 1, Buzzell Bridge Road “sustained substantial damage,” so what is also known as the East Access Road will remain closed, the Corps of Engineers said in a news release.

The Corps of Engineers requested that visitors not walk, bike or swim in that area for safety reasons.

A recreation area at the main entrance, which includes a shelter, bathroom and playground, remains open, though the road leading to the dam and office is closed because of damage, the news release said.

The West Branch Access recreational area, which is reached via Tucker Hill Road, is open to the public, despite having been flooded by the July 1 storm. But the area will be closed to pedestrians and vehicles in early August so that the bridge crossing the Ompompanoosuc River can be repainted, a process that may take up to six weeks to complete.
