Thetford Write-Ins Elected ‘Like It or Not’

Tuesday, March 06, 2018

Thetford — Despite no one filing to run for a two-year Selectboard seat, outgoing board member Jessica Eaton was elected as a write-in with 143 votes.

Former Selectboard member Bill Huff also earned 83 write-in votes for the seat, which he also was not running for, Town Clerk Tracy Borst said Tuesday night.

Borst said she had checked with state election officials, even though Eaton had said she didn’t want to be on the board: “Like it or not you’re elected,” Borst said.

If Eaton resigns from the post, the Selectboard will need to find someone to fill the vacancy, Borst said. She said the issue is likely to come up at next Monday’s Selectboard meeting.

Also at the polls on Tuesday, Thetford voters approved both a $9 million school budget and a $172,000 loan to cover a deficit from the 2016-17 school year.

Voters also re-elected Li Shen to a three-year Selectboard seat and re-elected Kristen Downey and Charlie Buttrey to the School Board.
