TYPE AND IMAGE SPECS FOR COLOR REPRODUCTION

Type:

  • Black text should be 100% Black (no cyan, magenta or yellow content); 6 pt. or larger and should be set to overprint.
  • Black text set at less than 80% black should be 12 pt. or larger.
  • Color text: color text should be 14 pt. or larger, ideally composed of no more than 2 colors plus black.
  • Text reversed out of color background should be 14 pt. or larger (i.e. white text on a color background).

Images:

  • Color images: leave in RGB, include profile and adjust so that they are pleasing to you on screen and have good contrast and good gray balance. Lean towards more contrast than less. Effective resolution: 170 - 200 dpi (higher dpi will not increase quality, just makes file bigger; lower will tend to be unsharp). Note if the image must be supplied in CMYK, please include the profile.
  • Grayscale images: use 30% dot gain. Same dpi as color, above.
  • Most images will benefit from sharpening, unless sharpening is being applied in the camera.
  • Color blocks and tints: if you include areas of color blocks or tints, specify them in CMYK, with a minimum 8% dot for any ink component. Assume any percentage less than 8% will not consistently print.
  • Borders/rules: minimum 1 pt width.
