WINDSOR — 4-H clubs in Windsor County are looking for more adults to volunteer with children who participate in a variety of programs.

The county has three 4-H clubs: Green Mountain 4-H, which is based in Springfield, Vt., and focuses on shooting sports; Green Mountain Teamsters, which is based in Pomfret and focuses on working steers; the Hartland Cattle Club, which is based in Hartland and focuses on dairy cows; and the newly chartered Hill Hoppers 4-H Club, said Amber Thibodeau, who is the 4-H educator for Windham and Windsor counties through the University of Vermont Extension and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Children can start participating in 4-H programs at age 5 and continue through age 18.

The Windsor County clubs have around 15 volunteers and around 30 participants. “4-H really depends on volunteers to make our programs successful,” Thibodeau said.

Volunteers do not h ave to have a child enrolled in 4-H to volunteer with its programs. They also do not need to volunteer with a club directly: People can volunteer at schools and libraries they might use 4-H curriculum. They also do not have to be involved in agriculture programs: 4-H also has life skills programs like sewing and photography.

“We are always interested in volunteers who just want to be involved and we can find ways to connect them with youth or vice versa,” Thibodeau said. “There’s lots of avenue for youth to get involved and that’s where the adults come in.”

Volunteers must be 18 or older and pass a background check.
