Building bridges in Norwich

Jim Faughnan, right, looks at a beam on a pedestrian bridge he helped to assemble along with, from left, Gerry Plummer, Bridge McDowell and Bob Fisken, all Norwich residents and volunteers with Norwich Trails, at Huntley Meadow in Norwich, Vt., on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023. The 56-foot bridge, which cost about $32,000 total and was funded through donations, will replace a suspension bridge built by Scott McClure Miller as an Eagle Scout project in 1992 that was removed in 2011 when it became structurally unsound. The new bridge will allow pedestrians to access Huntley Meadow by crossing Blood Brook near the American Legion rather than walking along a longer stretch of Beaver Meadow Road, which is well trafficked and lacks sidewalks. “This will be way safer,” Faughnan said.
