Miriam “Penny” Austin

Lebanon, N.H. — Miriam “Penny” Austin passed away on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018 at the Mertens House in Woodstock, Vt. surrounded by her family.  She was born in Littleton, N.H. on August 1, 1933, daughter of Walter and Wyllian (Twombley) Elms.  Penny graduated in 1951 from Springfield, Vt. High School and married her high school sweetheart, Jim Austin, on Nov. 6, 1954.

After high school she took a secretarial job at The Fellows Gear Shaper.   She worked there until 1957 at which time she started her family.  In 1970 the family moved to Lebanon, N.H.  Over the years, Penny worked as a secretary at Honey Gardens Dairy, Billings Dairy, First N.H. Bank of Lebanon, Dartmouth National Bank, Fleet Bank and the Bank of America in Hanover N.H.  She was also secretary of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce for a number of years.

Penny’s early years were spent in the shadow of the White Mountains which inspired her love of the outdoors, but her greatest passion was skiing.  She was a certified ski instructor, helping run and teach at the Whaleback ski week program for over a decade and continued to ski into her early 80’s.  She cherished her time with her family and friends, and could always be found at Jim’s side for any antique car activities.

Penny was predeceased by her father Walter Elms, her mother Wyllian Elms Tarbell, her stepfather Fred Tarbell and brother Walter Elms.

Penny is survived by her husband Jim Austin; her son Jay, his wife Betsy, of Essex, Vt.; her son John, of Plainfield, N.H.; and daughter Shelly Nolfi, her husband Charlie, of Needham, Mass.;  grandchildren Lindsay, husband Justin Hart, Colchester, Vt.; Peter wife Chaundra of Portland Ore.; Meredith husband Brandon Ackel of Williston, Vt.;  Grace and Emma Nolfi of Needham, Mass. and great-grandchild Jack Austin of Portland, Ore.

She is also survived by her brother George, his wife Ruthann of Tempe, Ariz.; sister Wyllian Jarvis of Chester Vt.; sister Patricia Danahey, her husband John of Westfield, Mass.; sister-in-law Alta Clark of DeRidder, La. as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon, N.H.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the Ricker Funeral Home, at 59 School Street in Lebanon.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Penny’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association at www@act.alz.org.
