Etna, N.H. — Jinny Kim Hartman of Etna, N.H. passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016.

Jinny was born March 23, 1964 in South Korea, the middle child of Ok Soon Hong and Nam Gyun Kim, both of whom were physicians who came to America ahead of their children in 1966. In 1970 Jinny and her older sister Joyce moved from Korea where they had been living with their grandmother to America to be reunited with their parents in Queens, N.Y. The following year, her sister Alice was born and the family moved to Dix Hills, N.Y. Jinny attended school there and excelled in the sciences and enjoyed athletics.

She escaped Long Island to attend Wesleyan University. Her college years are memorable for her continuing love of science, dance, and the arts. She took up running and rowing, earning her varsity letter in crew. Following college, Jinny entered Mount Sinai School of Medicine and moved on to a residency in Anesthesiology at The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center where she met the love of her life, Gregg Hartman, to whom she was married for 22 years.

Jinny then joined Gregg as a faculty member, and the following year they started their family. A son, Benjamin, was born in 1995, and a daughter, Madeline (Matti), was born in 1998. In 1999 the Hartmans moved to Etna, N.H. Jinny and Gregg joined the faculty of The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and the Department of Anesthesiology at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Their children immediately became part of the Upper Valley community, attending the Ray, Richmond, and Hanover High Schools. Both of them have moved on to Boston for college at Northeastern University where Ben is a third year student and Matti is a freshman.

Jinny will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and the most supportive friend. There was nothing she enjoyed more than watching her children play ice hockey, or simply witnessing them grow and mature, and with her husband engaging in endless projects and adventures. She was a valued confidante to her many friends and their children, who she enjoyed nurturing as much as she did her own.

As a friend described, “whenever you saw Jinny, you knew your day was going to be better by having seen her.” She was a creative potter, a scuba diver, a runner, a gourmet cook, and an endless lover of fashion. She will also be remembered as a valued colleague. At the medical center she was the director of the medical student anesthesiology rotation, an active clinician specializing in obstetrics and pediatric anesthesia, and a devoted teacher.

Jinny is survived by her husband Gregg, son Benjamin, daughter Matti, mother Oksana, mother-in-law Kathy, and sisters Joyce and Alice.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016 at the Bema at Dartmouth College with calling hours from 1p.m. -4 p.m. A private celebration in loving memory of her will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jinny’s name to Hanover High School. Please direct funds to Girls Ice Hockey, Boys Ice Hockey, or the Student Awareness Fund at 41 Lebanon St., Hanover, NH 03755. Messages of condolence may be expressed with the family through an online guestbook by visiting www.rickerfuneralhome.com
