Croydon — Two people were killed and a Sharon woman faces charges of driving while intoxicated and negligent homicide following a head-on car crash on Route 10 in Croydon late Friday night.

According to a news release from the New Hampshire State Police, Kristine Lake, 22, of Sharon, was driving a tan 2006 Hyundai Sonata north on Route 10 when her car drifted into the southbound lane and collided with a dark blue 2001 Volvo S80 that was being driven by Michelle J. Fenimore, 20, of Brownington, Vt. Nicholas Carpenter, 18, of Coventry, Vt., was a passenger in Fenimore’s car.

The crash took place in a curve in the roadway between Cross Road and River Road at about 11:15 p.m. Fenimore attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to, police said.

The two cars suffered heavy front-end damage, coming to a rest side by side in the northbound travel lane. Air bags in both vehicles appear to have deployed. A steady stream of smoke from the cars drifted into the air for more than an hour as authorities closed a portion of Route 10 and detoured traffic down Croydon Brook Road.

Fenimore and Carpenter were pronounced dead at the scene by the office of the chief medical examiner, the release said.

Lake, who police said suffered minor injuries in the crash, faces two counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated and negligent homicide.

She was released on $50,000 personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Newport District Court on Oct. 3.

The investigation is being handled by the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.
