WEST LEBANON — A two-alarm fire damaged the second story of a condominium unit at 23 Pleasant St. on Friday afternoon.

Hank Clarke was bringing his recycling outside when he noticed smoke coming from a neighbor’s roof at the Village Green Condominiums.

“It looked like it was rolling over the roof,” he said.

He and another neighbor, Derek Williamson, knocked on the door and alerted the owner, who retrieved one of her two cats and left the building. The second cat remained at large but was believed to be safely outside the house.

Within a few minutes, flames could be seen coming from the roof. “It was pretty quick,” Williamson said.

The fire started in the bathroom and spread to part of one bedroom, said Lebanon Fire Chief James Wheatley. No one was injured in the fire.

The residence is one of four connected condominium units and the only one of the four to sustain damage.

Crews atop Lebanon’s ladder truck were able to reach the roof and quickly contain the fire. The second floor was badly damaged and is not habitable due to contaminants and lack of electricity, but Wheatley said that it is not a total loss.

The residence, which is owned by Sarah and Steven Schoettler Woll, is assessed at $261,000, according to city property records.

In addition to the Lebanon Fire Department, crews from Hartford, Hanover and Norwich responded to the scene, with Canaan, Plainfield, Enfield and Woodstock providing station coverage for the responding departments.

The cause is under investigation and not considered suspicious.
