Update, Wednesday morning: Vermont State Police have identified the driver who died in Tuesday’s crash as Peter S. Hayward, 70, of Jamaica, Vt. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Windsor — A driver died on Interstate 91 southbound in Windsor today after a Subaru Forester collided with ledges.

Police have not identified the deceased person, pending notification of family.

The driver was traveling southbound when the car “departed the roadway, traveling into the median” a few miles south of Exit 9, according to a news release from Vermont State Police. It then collided with ledges and reentered the southbound lane of the highway.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was the second significant traffic crash on I-91 in Windsor County today. Around 6:18 a.m., a northbound tractor-trailer struck the guardrail of the bridge going over the Ottauquechee River. The rail was damaged so badly that the road is expected to be reduced to one lane for a week or more, transportation officials said.
