When the Claremont City Council voted unanimously last week to put a proposed tax/spending cap on the Nov. 3 ballot, the action was hailed as a victory for the democratic process. A sizeable number of Claremont residents had expressed support for the cap by signing a petition, and scheduling a referendum means that the decision will ultimately be in the hands of voters. NEWS: Cost to Renovate Schools: $21 M illion
Lebanon -- The price of renovating Lebanon Junior High School and Seminary Hill School would total $21.5 million, before factoring in related expenses such as parking, utilities and landscaping, architects told the Lebanon School Board Finance and Facilities Committee at a meeting yesterday.

Newport -- Aided by tax and Medicaid revenue and federal stimulus funds, Sullivan County cut its deficit by almost $3.2 million in fiscal year 2009, according to a draft audit released yesterday.

Washington (AP) -- Sen. Edward M. Kennedy said in a new book that he was not romantically involved with young Mary Jo Kopechne and that he never escaped the despair he felt after she died in the 1969 car crash that has been seared into the national consciousness as Chappaquiddick.
