The U.S. House of Representatives agreed last Friday to limit carbon dioxide emissions, a legislative first that could lead to a federal cap-and-trade program, one mechanism favored by environmentalists and economists to curb the most dangerous greenhouse gas. Or not: The original bill sponsored by Reps. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and Ed Markey, D-Mass., was considerably weakened along the way, and passage in the Senate is by no means assured. See full story

NEWS: City Shows Interest in Sacred Heart School
Lebanon -- The city of Lebanon might like to move into Sacred Heart Public School now that the school district is moving out, city officials said at a meeting last night. But they sought assurances that the school district doesn't intend ever to use it as a school again.

NEWS: Lebanon Mobile Home Co-Op Is in the Black'
Lebanon -- Last year, residents of what was then called LeBrun's Mobile Home Park were worried that the park would be sold out from under them. In 2008, Iron Realty LLC, a Connecticut-based company, offered $1.625 million to buy the property. With guidance from the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund, residents matched the offer and bought LeBrun's in June, making it the states 89th cooperatively owned manufactured housing community.

NEWS: Kirkuk Blast Spoils Iraqi Cities Takeover
Baghdad -- Only hours after Iraqi troops had paraded in celebration of taking control of their cities from U.S. troops, militants mounted their first challenge to Iraq's new era with a car bombing yesterday that claimed the lives of at least 33 people and wounded 97 others in Kirkuk.
