Jacks Put It Together in Win
Staff ReportsWindsor High boys basketball coach Harry Ladue would have admitted as much if any of the above had been responsible for his Yellowjackets' 60-46 Marble Valley League win over Bellows Falls last night. It would have been especially appropriate against the Terriers, who stayed within a point of the Jacks (4-5) through the first half.
Instead, it was the simple stuff that brought Windsor back to the win column.
We played a little better defense, and we got a little more out of our offense, Ladue said matter-of-factly. That's as simple as it gets. Nothing special.
Hunter Knox hit some big shots in the second half, according to Ladue, on his way to a team-high 19 points. Windsor also picked up 14 points each from Kyle Weidman and Cody TanCreti in quickly bouncing back from an overtime loss at Mill River on Friday night.
Ladue also credited the play of Jake Perkins, who came off the bench to score most of his five points in the second half as Windsor slowly pulled away.
We hit our foul shots in the fourth quarter, Ladue added. That helped us lengthen the lead.
Windsor returns to action at home against Mount St. Joseph on Friday night.
Sharon Academy 46 Chelsea 44
Chelsea -- Colin Pope and Otto Pierce each came up with 11 points on the road, and Sharon Academy survived a furious finish by Chelsea to hang on for the win. Trailing by 12 with 1:20 to play, the Red Devils closed to within a basket before the Phoenix ended things.
I'm not happy giving up a 12-point lead, but our kids kept their composure, Sharon coach Tom Vashel said. It was a very slow start for both teams. We really need to find our physical aggression. Our defense was good, Vashel said.
All of Pope's points were from the floor, including a trio of three-pointers. Pierce had a three-pointer and hit two free throws. Sam Wood chipped in with nine points for Sharon (4-1), which travels to Cabot Friday night.
Oxbow 69, Rivendell 19
Bradford, Vt. -- Oxbow last month traveled to Orford and escaped with a two-point win against Rivendell. The D-II Raptors tried the D-III Olympians again last night -- this time at their place -- and didn't fare nearly as well. The O's came out and hung a 15-4 first quarter on the visitors who also had back-to-back two-point periods before the night was over.
Mike Cuirleo had 16 points for Oxbow, including four three-pointers. Nathan Ellsworth had 13, and Zach Kelley added nine in a game that was 31-6 at halftime. Oxbow (2-6) hosts Lamoille on Monday. Rivendell (1-4) gets a visit from Craftsbury tomorrow night.
Burr and Burton 59 Hartford 45
Manchester, Vt. -- After holding the host Bulldogs to just 14 points in the first half, the Hurricanes (6-2) lost the keys to their defense and dropped their second straight game.
Burr and Burton dominated inside after intermission and eventually went to the foul line 26 times, converting 20 free throws to take control.
We just got beat up on the boards tonight, Hartford coach Mike Gaudette said. We had a good first half, but we had too many breakdowns in the second half. We just fell asleep defensively.
Logan White finished with a team-high 14 points for Hartford, which visits Springfield on Friday night.
Girls Basketball
Hillsboro-Deering 45 Mascoma 42
Hillsboro, N.H. -- Although the Royals (3-1) led for 30 of the 32 minutes, according to Mascoma coach Mike Neily, the Hillcats (3-0) made the most of the two they led.
The difference: Down 31-20 at the half, Hillsboro used its press to put Mascoma on the defensive. We didn't take care of the ball on the press, Neily said. We have a tendency sometimes where we don't start the second half strong. We let up a little bit and let them back into the game.
Jillian Buckwold netted a team-high 16 points and Kayla Dole sank three 3-pointers en route to 11 points for the Royals, who host Winnisquam on Friday.
Conant 52, Stevens 33
Jaffrey, N.H. -- A dead spot in the second quarter kept the Cardinals from making things hotter for the defending Class M champion Orioles on the road.
It was a good game; I have no complaints. I think we just got a little rattled there in the second quarter, Stevens coach Carl Desilets said of his team's three-point showing in that frame.
Jasmine Matos had five field goals among her 13 points to lead the Cardinals, who bounced back with a 12-6 third-quarter advantage over the hosts. Alyssa Nichols had eight points for Stevens, including a 3-pointer. But Brooke Springfield had a huge night for Conant with 27 points, including 14 free throws.
Stevens (0-3) plays its fourth straight road game Friday night at Gilford.
