Staff ReportsOn Monday, the anticipation became celebration.
Gray reached the plateau in the opening round of the Green Mountain Holiday Tournament in Chester, Vt., drilling a 3-pointer with 37.5 seconds left in the Panthers' 71-50 win over Leland & Gray.
The Panthers' dominance continued last night with a 70-31 win over Rivendell at home.
The milestone was a relief for Gray, who wanted to achieve it as soon as possible coming out of the gate this season so that his focus could shift squarely to team-oriented goals.
Not that the four-year varsity stalwart wasn't interested -- he personally contacted his two previous high school coaches, Barrett Williams and Mike Olson, to confirm his scoring totals heading into this season.
I just wanted a number that I knew for sure was correct, Gray said in a phone interview yesterday. After I knew I had the right numbers, I wanted to hopefully get it done in the first three or four games. Now that it's over with, we can focus on the next prize, which hopefully for us is a championship.
Actually, Thetford did win a championship the following night, disposing of Twin Valley 67-48 for the tournament crown.
Last night, Ian Anderson put in a season-high 17 points, while Gray pitched in 11 and Shawn Thurston eight in Thetford's win over Rivendell. The Panthers improved to 6-0.

The Hurricanes trailed by three after the first period and led by just four at halftime before taking control down the stretch.
The difference in the second half was effort, said Hartford coach Steve Landon. Our defensive effort especially in the second half was the best I could have asked for.
