R.I.'s Pell, Father of College Grants, Dies
Claiborne Pell, a six-term Rhode Island Democrat who rose to be chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, died yesterday at his Newport, R.I., home. He had Parkinson's disease since 1994. He was 90.

Jerusalem -- An Israeli airstrike yesterday killed a senior Hamas leader, the first to die in the six-day assault on the Gaza Strip, as Israel readied for a possible ground invasion that military officials said could come at any moment.

U.S. Hands Green Zone To Iraqis
Baghdad -- The United States yesterday handed the Iraqi government formal control of the Green Zone, the locus of power in the country and symbol of American influence for the past five years, but officials announced that U.S. soldiers would continue to help maintain security in the area for at least the next 90 days.
